Don't Go Out at Night

This piece was written after a conversation with a previous coworker about living in a part of town for which the recommendation was not to wander too far off campus at night. Out of this conversation, I started picturing a landlord trying to rent a house in a sketchy part of town, and play up the positives of the house and area while advising the person buying the house "it's a nice area - just don't go out at night!". The second half of that sentence became a repeated line in this poem, which is a bit more lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek than many of the other poems here.

The place is clean, and up to code,
The layout is just right.
There are two parks just down the road.
Just don't go out at night.

The fridge is new, the stove as well;
Those are fluorescent lights.
The place has got a new doorbell.
Just don't go out at night.

The bathroom's large, the en suite too,
The closets aren't too tight.
This place would be so good for you.
Just don't go out at night.

The rooms are big, the floors hardwood,
The space is big and bright.
It's not such a bad neighbourhood.
Just don't go out at night.

The walls are thick, you'll have your peace;
This place is worth the fight.
Write your cheque now, and sign the lease!
Just don't go out at night.
